Understanding GATE PI: Breadth Across Manufacturing & Management

GATE PI doesn’t ask: “Program this CNC machine” or “Manage this production shift”

Exam Structure & Scoring Strategy

Format:

• Duration: 3 hours
• Marks: 100
• Questions: 65

Scoring Focus:

Manufacturing (10-12%) + Production Planning (10-12%) + Industrial Engineering (10-12%) + Eng Mechanics (10-12%) + Quality/Reliability (8-10%) = 48-58% of marks

• Solution: V = πDN/1000 = π × 50 × 1000 / 1000 ≈ 157 m/min

Example 2: “Tool life equation: VT^n = C. If cutting speed increases 50%, tool life becomes what %?”

• Solution: If V₂ = 1.5V₁, then T₂ = T₁ × (1/1.5)^(1/n)
• For n=0.25: T₂ = T₁ × (0.67)^4 ≈ 0.20T₁ (20% of original)
