Understanding GATE CH: Process Understanding Over Procedural Knowledge

GATE CH doesn’t ask: “What are the steps to operate this distillation column?”

GATE CH asks: “Calculate equilibrium composition using vapor-liquid equilibrium” or “Determine residence time for required conversion” or “Analyze separation efficiency using HETP.”

Format:

• Duration: 3 hours
• Marks: 100

Scoring Focus:

Process Calculations & Thermodynamics (18-22%) + Mass Transfer (12-15%) + Fluid Mechanics (12-15%) = 42-52% of marks

General Aptitude (20 marks)

Same across all GATE. Achievable score: 14-16 with focused prep.

Core CH Subjects (80 marks)

1. Process Calculations & Thermodynamics (18-22% = 14-18 marks) - HIGHEST

Most Tested Topics:

• Material balances (steady-state, recycle streams, bypass)
• Energy balances (steady-state)
• Thermodynamic properties (Equations of State, Phase equilibrium)
• Thermo cycles for reference
• Phase diagrams and equilibrium

Real GATE Questions:

Example 1: “Feed 100 mol/s, composition 40% A. 80% of A converts to B in reactor. What are product molar flows?”

• Solution: A consumed = 100 × 0.4 × 0.8 = 32 mol/s
• A remaining = 40 - 32 = 8 mol/s
• B produced = 32 mol/s (stoichiometry dependent)
• What GATE tests: Material balance with conversion

Example 2: “Recycle stream exists. Fresh feed A + recycled A = 100 mol/s entering reactor. 50% conversion. Find recycle ratio.”

• What GATE tests: Recycle stream analysis

Example 3: “Using Van der Waals or Ideal gas law, calculate pressure given V, T, n.”

• What GATE tests: Equation of state application

   • VLE calculations

2. Fluid Mechanics & Mechanical Operations (12-15% = 10-12 marks)

Most Tested Topics:

• Fluid properties and flow classification
• Bernoulli equation and applications
• Pressure drop in pipes
• Pumps and compressors selection
• Filtration, sedimentation
• Size reduction

Real GATE Questions:

Example 1: “Oil (ρ=800kg/m³, μ=0.1Pa·s) flows in a 50mm diameter pipe at velocity 2m/s. Reynolds number? Flow type?”

• Solution: Re = ρVD/μ = 800 × 2 × 0.05 / 0.1 = 8000 (Turbulent)
• What GATE tests: Reynolds number calculation and interpretation

Example 2: “Using Darcy-Weisbach, calculate pressure drop in 100m pipe, 25mm diameter, flow rate 0.01 m³/s, f=0.02.”

• Solution: ΔP = f × (L/D) × (ρV²/2)
• What GATE tests: Pressure drop calculation

• Heat exchangers (LMTD and effectiveness-NTU methods)
• Boiling and condensation

Real GATE Questions:

Example 1: “Composite wall: brick layer k₁=0.7W/mK, thickness 0.1m; insulation k₂=0.04W/mK, thickness 0.05m. Heat flux = 100W/m². Find temperature drop across brick.”

• Solution: ΔT = q × (L/k) = 100 × 0.1 / 0.7 ≈ 14.3°C
• What GATE tests: Composite conduction

Example 2: “Heat exchanger, hot stream 100-50°C, cold stream in 20°C, out 60°C. Calculate LMTD.”

• Solution: LMTD = [(100-60) - (50-20)] / ln(40/30) ≈ 34.8°C

Example 2: “Distillation: Acetone-water mixture. Using equilibrium line, determine number of theoretical stages.”

Example 3: “Packed column absorption: Calculate N_OG (overall transfer units) given height, mass transfer coefficient.”

• Reactor sizing and residence time
• Non-isothermal reactors basics
• Catalyst and reaction mechanisms

Example 1: “First-order reaction: k=0.1 min⁻¹, C₀=1M, desired 90% conversion. Find residence time.”

• Solution: t = -ln(1-X)/k = -ln(0.1)/0.1 ≈ 23 minutes
• What GATE tests: First-order kinetics

Example 2: “Batch reactor: Product concentration changes with time. Plot and determine rate constant.”

• What GATE tests: Data analysis

Example 3: “Comparing CSTR and PFR for same reaction: Same conversion, which has larger reactor volume?”
